Shoulder pain

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which makes it easy to strain. Pain reaching overhead, behind your back or lying on that side at night is common. Often the neck and upper back are involved too, so I examine those as well as the shoulder.

Problems I treat

Rotator cuff strain and tendon pain, impingement (pain lifting the arm), stiffness after injury or surgery, and frozen shoulder, which can take a long time to settle but does improve. I also see a lot of shoulder pain that is coming from the neck.

I have helped patients through rehabilitation after shoulder and back surgery, working alongside their surgeon’s advice.

Treatment

Soft tissue work around the shoulder blade and upper arm, mobilisation of the shoulder, neck and ribs, and a short, progressive exercise plan to rebuild strength. Shoulders recover best when they are strengthened, so the exercises matter.

What you can do at home

  • Keep the arm moving in a pain-free range.
  • Avoid long periods with the arm held still in a sling unless advised.
  • Sleep with a pillow under the sore arm.
  • Hold off heavy overhead lifting while it settles.

See your GP or get urgent help if you have

  • You cannot lift your arm at all after a fall
  • The shoulder looks deformed or swollen after injury
  • Shoulder pain with chest pain or shortness of breath (call 999)
  • A hot, red, swollen joint with fever

If you are not sure, call NHS 111. Clare will always tell you if she thinks you need to see a doctor rather than an osteopath.

Questions about shoulder pain

Can osteopathy help frozen shoulder?
Treatment and exercise can help keep the shoulder moving and ease pain while a frozen shoulder runs its course. It is usually a slow condition, and I will be honest about timescales.
Can you help after shoulder surgery?
Yes, once your surgeon is happy for you to start rehabilitation. I work within their guidance.
